Small Business Will Feel the Pinch with Paid Sick Leave Mandate
Proposed legislation now being considered in the final days of the legislative session presents onerous implications small businesses in Connecticut that no other state has allowed. If House Bill (HB) 6187 An Act Concerning Mandating Employers Provide Sick Leave to Employees becomes law, small businesses will see their bottom line earnings disappear and many may have to shut down or if they can, move out of state.
This bill would require that any business that employs 50 or more workers be required to offer paid sick leave. Once employees work for 120 days they would be able use up to 52 hours of paid sick leave a year.
As I noted, no other state has these provisions on its books and for a good reason: small companies struggling even in good times would be hard pressed to stay in business in this national recession if they have to put up with this costly mandate .
HB 6187 may be a well intentioned attempt to provide relief for families who are also struggling. But both employer and employee will lose if that company is no longer able to do business in Connecticut because of yet another demand coming from our state Capitol.
The regular legislative session ends June 3 but the bill is likely to come in the House of Representatives in the next few days. I urge you to call your state representative at 1-860-240-8500 and ask them not to allow this proposed legislation to become law.
Sincerely,
Larry

I agree. The anti-business enviroment that the Democrats have shown not only hurt small businesses but hurt the income potential of workers. Many small businesses that are on the edge of closing, will close, at that point more tax revenue disappears. The logic of this type of legislation, especially in this economic enviroment baffles me. I have had it with the attitude that business is bad.
